This book relates how Sri Lanka planned, strategized and executed a certain vision of international relations over two years. It resulted in bringing together a majority of member states at the Human Rights Council in support of it and confined the votes against it at a Special Session to the members of the EU. It reveals the basis on which Sri Lanka negotiated with the world from a position of an accused, to successfully persuade the majority of the Council to challenge the very norms by which it was judge. It tells the story of a maverick Ambassador, Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka, who carved a path of his own to take on the world order, challenging its hegemonic ideology and exposing its hypocrisy and double standards, winning the respect and active support of his colleagues. It is a narration and interpretation of the events constituting this dramatic episode of Sri Lanka’s wartime and diplomatic history as it took place, by the wife of the Ambassador / Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the UN in Geneva, who was his constant companion and close confidant.
